Finchale Training College is a specialist provider of vocational support and training for disabled adults who cannot find appropriate support in their home areas.

Who is the programme for?
The programme is designed for learners who are:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • have experienced disorders in and around the autistic spectrum that are a barrier to learning and progression to employment, i.e. Asperger's Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders.

  • have reached the stage when they feel themselves, and are assessed by the professionals supporting them, to be ready for progression
  • are unable to access mainstream further education and training at this stage in their development.
Learners may also to have experienced additional disabilities and other disadvantages that will need to be addressed if the learner is to progress.

What does the programme consist of?
Each learner will be invited to meet with us to identify their learning needs and to ensure that he/she will be able to benefit from the programme in the time available.

Resulting from this we will design a programme of up to 25 weeks consisting of the following:

1. A Learning Foundation Programme of up to 15 weeks, customised through an
Individual Learning Plan to meet the needs of each learner and consisting of the following elements:
  • Prepare 2 Change (levels 1 and 2) that will address:
    • Identification of personal skills and strengths.
    • Team working skills.
    • Individual barriers to learning and resolution strategies.
    • Identification and management of stress.
    • Effective communication skills.
    • Realistic goal setting and achievable outcomes.
    • Effective social skills.
  • Individual Literacy, Numeracy and ICT support .
  • Individual and group therapeutic interventions.
  • Specialist support for learners with specific needs.
  • Career advice and guidance.
  • Preparation of a Transition Support Plan.
The Programme will take into account flexibility in attendance, if required by individual learners, so as to enable
phased entry building up to full-time attendance. It will be delivered at Finchale Training College on a daily travel basis.

2. Transition to further learning and training.

Support and guidance to the learner and the learner's host organisation will be provided for an additional 10 weeks after progression from the Programme. This part of the Programme will be determined by individual need. However, generically it will consist of the following elements:
  • Sharing of information and proposed strategies for learning with the host organisation.

  • Co-ordination of multi-agency support so as to ensure continuity of support in the host organisation.

  • Professional advice and development for host staff.
  • Personalised introduction of the learner.
  • Phased support to the learner in the host organisation.

Note: the last week of the learner's Learning Foundation Programme will include visits to the learner's host organisation in preparation for transition.

It is expected that learners will progress to a wide range of next options, such as :
  • Employment and economic activity
(open, supported and voluntary - part- and full-time)

  • Further Education.
  • Work-based Learning.
  • Jobcentre Plus disability programmes,
    e.g. Work Preparation and Workstep.

  • New Deal options
