EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The aim of the course is to provide you with the practical and technical ability to work in Horticulture and allied industries.
This course is intended to help you prepare and progress to employment of more than 16 hrs per week in a wide variety of jobs that are constantly being advertised for the Local Employment Partnerships
On successful completion of this course you will be have the necessary skills to apply for vacancies in general and specific areas of horticulture, including public authorities, specialised producers, landscape contractors, garden and commercial retail centres. There are also opportunities for self-employment.
THE COURSE
The course provides training in the following areas that will enable you to specialise in the Amenity or Commercial sectors (including garden centres), or mix and match skills across the whole sector:
Amenity
- Assisting in establishing ornamental plantings and turf
- Maintaining ornamental plantings and turf
- Erecting structures and maintaining hard landscape features
- Preparing sports facility areas for play
- Health & Safety
- Establishing ornamental plantings and turf
- Erecting structures and maintaining equipment
- Maintaining safe and healthy work practices and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment
Nursery
- Monitor and maintain health and safety
- Maintain and develop personal performance
- Maintain the condition of plants and other
resources during transportation
- Propagate plants by vegetative methods
- Propagate plants from seed
- Prepare growing media
- Monitor environmental conditions for protected crops
- Identify and collect plants for dispatch
COURSE LENGTH
The length of the course is flexible - up to a total of 52 weeks, which includes a period of work experience of up to 10 weeks and 20 days holiday.
QUALIFICATION(S)
You have the opportunity to achieve one or a combination of the following:
- Certificate of Horticultural Skills
- Horticultural Skills Tests
- Level I Horticulture -NPTC Award
- Certificate/Diploma in practical Horticulture Skills
- Level II Amenity Horticulture:
Nursery practice
- NPTC Safe use of mowers
- NPTC Safe use of brush wood cutters
